New York can be stressful. Sometimes you just need to take a break from the crazy and go on a weekend getaway! I’m a person who loves to travel, and indulge in the sights and history of a city. So here are my top 5 best cities to visit when you need to leave New York for the weekend and relax!
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston is a very historical city. It is filled with many museums and civic landmarks. Each neighborhood is unique and has a different style. There are different cuisines and styles of the shops, galleries and open markets. There are many things you can do there, including exploring the Black Heritage Trail, Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, the iconic grounds of Harvard, or doing some shopping in the tons of stores at Quincy Market!
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, the capital of Pennsylvania, is also very well known for its rich history. You can visit the Liberty Bell, pop in at Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed, and see other American Revolutionary sites. Become a champion on the iconic steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Sylvester Stallone had his triumphant run in the film “Rocky.” Whatever you do, just make sure you don’t leave the city without trying Pat’s King of Steaks–the originator of the Philly Cheese Steak!
Newport, Rhode Island
Newport is a city on the water. It’s a yacht-filled harbor. It is renowned for its annual sailing regatta. Newport is also known for the Gilded Age mansions lining Bellevue Avenue, some which are now museums. The most famous is The Breakers, an 1895 mansion patterned after a Renaissance palace. Walk through history and along a beautiful beach to start your weekend off right.
Mystic, Connecticut
Mystic has the nation’s largest maritime museum where there is a number of preserved sailing ships, most known being the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan. Mystic has a bunch of breweries and wineries. The whole area is surrounded by water and is known for its great seafood. Take a stroll through the quaint downtown area, grab an ice cream and melt the stress of the city away.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Portsmouth is a New Hampshire port city on the Piscataquis River. In the Strawberry Banke Museum there are 17th and 18th century houses, where costumed staff demonstrates traditional crafts. Downtown’s Market Square is a must go. Prescott Park has riverside gardens and boat docks. Former research submarine USS Albacore is in a park, alongside a visitor center and is certainly worth a walkthrough. If you really want to get a great view, take a helicopter tour run by Seacoast Helicopters.
